New York Times Bestselling Author Sarah MacLean returns with the next book in the Bareknuckle Bastards series about three brothers bound by a secret that they cannot escape—and the women who bring them to their knees.
The Lady’s Plan
When Lady Henrietta Sedley declares her twenty-ninth year her own, she has plans to inherit her father’s business, to make her own fortune, and to live her own life. But first, she intends to experience a taste of the pleasure she’ll forgo as a confirmed spinster. Everything is going perfectly…until she discovers the most beautiful man she’s ever seen tied up in her carriage and threatening to ruin the Year of Hattie before it’s even begun.
The Bastard’s Proposal
When he wakes in a carriage at Hattie’s feet, Whit, a king of Covent Garden known to all the world as Beast, can’t help but wonder about the strange woman who frees him—especially when he discovers she’s headed for a night of pleasure . . . on his turf. He is more than happy to offer Hattie all she desires…for a price.
An Unexpected Passion
Soon, Hattie and Whit find themselves rivals in business and pleasure. She won’t give up her plans; he won’t give up his power . . . and neither of them sees that if they’re not careful, they’ll have no choice but to give up everything . . . including their hearts.
Our Review
Honest review based on an ARC provided by Edelweiss. Many thanks to the publisher for this opportunity.
Another fun romance as you can be sure to read when the author is MacLean. Note this can be read as a standalone but it's the second in the Bareknuckle Bastards series.
After 29 years ignored by men and especially her father, Hattie has a plan of independence to be fulfilled during the next year. But meeting one of the Bareknuckle Brothers tied up inside her carriage and definitely not happy with her brother could be something that could either get in her way or make her twenty-ninth year even more perfect.
3.5, rounded up.
This book had many interesting members that while it was very MacLean I don't remember having seen them before, like lesbian romance (unfortunately, not the main couple, I'd love to have seen that couple get their standalone novel but who knows if she wasn't testing water?). Of course, we still have all the elements we can expect from her, too. Above all, a strong female lead but yet things never go her way, and that makes her very relatable.
I love Hattie's confidence in her abilities and how her lack of popularity among men never really affected her in any other department. She accepts that as a fact and keeps fighting for her beliefs. Her chemistry with Beast from the first encounter is just amazing thanks to that. She knows her looks aren't great—though Beast never agreed on this—but she also knows they're equals when it comes to intelligence. In fact, she's well aware she's above him in some areas and won't hesitate to use it.
I remember having great fun with the first number so I can't say this went better but I can't say it stands below, either. It's certainly a great follow up and as so I think it did an even better job of explaining what went on during the brother's past—I have a feeling this is a tad confusing in the first one—and laying ground for what I believe will now be Grace and Ewan's book. I haven't looked this forward to a character book since MacLean's first series's ending, and I hope Ewan has a wonderful explanation to redeem himself. He's not as cruel here as during the first, you see the heroines have gradually tempered his actions, but cruel is still cruel.
As I said, this is another great historical and fun romance, recommended to any fans of the genre. You don't know what you're missing if you haven't read a book by Sarah MacLean.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
