Grady has found a crack in the wall—a crack to the outside world. But all he knows about life outside the compound comes from books, magazines, and a photograph of a creature that no longer exists. Things change when he meets a girl with raspberry-yellow hair, and a secret that could lead them to a world beyond the walls. A world where their abilities could change everything … or lead them both to ruin.

Experimental Lightning

Some stories come to authors like a bolt of lightning: they streak across the mind in a dazzling burst, leaving behind a path of scorched neurons, glittering fractal scars, and a feverish need to write it all down before any of it fades away.

Others are sewn together like a mad scientist’s experiment: every part laboriously pieced from the husks of other stories. A plot twist here. A character there. A stilled heart that needs just one more jolt of electricity before it’ll finally beat again.

Wild Horse was a little bit of both. It started with two characters whom I already knew, though the storyworld they inhabited was one that I didn’t. Soon, they took on a life of their own—their names changed, their personalities altered, they became stubborn whenever I tried to force their hands. At one point I stopped trying to control them and simply … followed them across the page. They connected. They argued. They spoke between the words. And a whole battered world sprang up around them, one with its own grim set of rules.

The end result was a story that’s brief in stature but large in scope—one that, hopefully, lingers in the reader’s mind even after that last line has been read. Like a lone tree smoldering in an empty field, or fresh stitches on a body that’s shuddering back to life—some things, I find, are worth pondering further.
