I haven't been reading manga lately, so it was a pleasant surprise to receive this one. And this is one of those titles that everyone has been talking about thanks to the anime adaptation (which I wasn't familiar with either), so of course I had high expectations.
And they were more than answered.
Coco is just a normal kid who works at her mother's atelier, but she's been fascinated by witches ever since she bought a magic book years before only to find out you're either born a witch or you aren't. You can't become one just with a book. That is until she sees the witch Qifrey perform magic and realizes you can do it by copying the drawings from that same magic book. However, things go out of control.
Eventually Coco will become Qifrey's apprentice as he's trying to investigate the person who sold that book to Coco, which contains forbidden spells. It's obviously uncommon for a normal person to become an apprentice so things will not be easy for Coco, and not everyone will accept her.
I've only read the first volume, which basically only introduces us the characters and this world they live in, but what really took my breath away are the drawings. This volume brings some illustrations that look more like a painting than a page in a manga book.
Coco still seems to be young so there was no romance so far, and I'm glad that it doesn't look like they'll try anything between her and Qifrey who is obviously an adult, and worse, a figure that is there to teach her. Actually, a lot of this manga made me think of The Little Prince, making Qifrey the pilot, maybe. But I'm sure this will depart from this ludic tale into more of an adventure, as the first volume already introduces some characters with potential to be villains and all else.
It's definitely the type of manga that will entice most audiences, and definitely most manga fans, with potential to become one of those unforgettable titles, if it isn't so already.
