[Review] Don't You Forget About Me - Mhairi McFarlane

Summary: You always remember your first love... don’t you?

If there’s anything worse than being fired from the worst restaurant in town, it’s coming home early to find your boyfriend in bed with someone else. Reeling from the humiliation of a double dumping in one day, Georgina takes the next job that comes her way—bartender in a newly opened pub. There’s only one problem: it’s run by the guy she fell in love with years ago. And—make that two problems—he doesn’t remember her. At all. But she has fabulous friends and her signature hot pink fur coat... what more could a girl really need?

Lucas McCarthy has not only grown into a broodingly handsome man, but he’s also turned into an actual grown-up, with a thriving business and a dog along the way. Crossing paths with him again throws Georgina’s rocky present into sharp relief—and brings a secret from her past bubbling to the surface. Only she knows what happened twelve years ago, and why she’s allowed the memories to chase her ever since. But maybe it’s not too late for the truth... or a second chance with the one that got away?

Honest review based on an ARC provided by Edelweiss. Many thanks to the publisher for this opportunity.

Georgina has just broken up with her boyfriend after finding out they weren't exclusive, according to him of course. And this was right after her losing her job. Thanks to her brother-in-law she did land a new job but it's with "the one who got away" back in high school. Also, the way things ended, we don't even know if it's for good or bad, but he actually doesn't remember her at all.

More like a 3.5 but not enough to be rounded up.

I think this could have been a lot more enjoyable, because as it is, I had lots of fun reading already. Georgina is super relatable and Lucas is a real catch, what a nice guy except for the part he was either able to forget he ever met Georgina back in school or he's pretending. Unless he has some serious reason, I don't think that's a thing a nice guy would do. Since you don't understand it before the end, you're able to enjoy him either way, which was great.

The issue really wasn't with the characters but with the tendency of the author to waste our time. This book would probably be a third of its current length if we didn't have to hear so many stories the characters tended to tell. I usually skip whenever I feel I'm at a part that shouldn't have made the final cut, but they were so constant I was afraid they would have a purpose eventually. Then they didn't.

In the end, we have the main story and a lot of short stories mixed in it. It really made me wonder if she wasn't planning on writing a collection of short stories and then noticed one get too long and decided to mix them all together to get a full-length book. This all made the book go round and never reach the point. And made me anxious. I've read another book by this author and I didn't remember her writing to be this prolix.

In sum, I feel this book could have been a 4-star had it been better edited. As it is, it does get a little boring at times and made me take a lot longer than I usually do. Still, the main story is entertaining and you'll love the characters, including the side characters. Also, I have to say Mark is the man I want to marry, excluding the fact he's already with Georgina's sister.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
