Character Interview

Rebecca Brown

1.         Please tell us about yourself.
My name is Rebecca but I get called all kinds of things. My family call me Youngest Brown, because I am. Sometimes they call me Becky, that’s usually if they’re in a good mood with me. But they aren’t in a good mood with me that often. When I grew up and became a stand up comic, I called myself Beck. I needed to be something new. I think that’s when I really became myself.
2.         How did your parents' accident affect you? What was it like growing up with your grandparents in the Scottish Highlands?
Well, you know how it is as a kid. You only know your own childhood, your own house, your own family. So to some extent, I thought my upbringing was kind of normal. Then, as I went to school and stuff, I saw that stark comparison and it became obvious that my home wasn’t like other people’s. But I loved all of my family. I did. Even my brother, Austen.
I think, because my mum and dad died in the crash when I was so little, it probably wasn’t as bad for me as for my brother and sister. But that’s looking back. At the time, I just felt confused. And that confusion grew and grew. Whenever I tried to talk about it or ask a question, I was shut down. That was very hard and at some point, it became unbearable.
3.         Tell us about your siblings. How's your relationship with them?
It was probably no better or worse than most. I was the youngest. Well, I still am. So that dynamic is quite defining, growing up. You have your place. And though a lot of people say the youngest is spoiled, I hope you’ll agree if you read about me, that I bloody wasn’t! I’m quite a loving person though. I loved Austen and Colette. And they loved me. That’s a basis for hope, always. Isn’t i?
4.         How did you meet Keller Baye?  What’s your first impression of him?
I met Keller at a gig. I thought he was a total creep straight off. He was, actually. But he’s persistent, I’ll give him that. When he has something in mind, he sees it all the way through. And he certainly had me in mind, though I didn’t understand why till… well, till later.
5.         As you spend time with him, what did you like about him?
Ok, now this will sound shallow, but he is incredibly easy on the eye. And I was, you know, I was shall we say… new to dating. And although I didn’t have lots of guys to compare him with, I could see he was unique. I pretended that I wasn’t terribly interested in him to start with, but oh my God, I was.
6.         When the truth was out, how did you feel?
Numb. Obliterated.
7.         If there was one thing you could do over, what would it be?
I think I can forgive myself most things, except for letting Maria Theresa down. She was my best friend and I didn’t deserve her.

Jenny Morton Potts
Jenny is a novelist, screenplay writer and playwright. After a series of 'proper jobs', she realised she was living someone else's life and escaped to Gascony to make gîtes. Knee deep in cement and pregnant, Jenny was happy. Then autism and a distracted spine surgeon wiped out the order. Returned to wonderful England, to write her socks off.
Jenny would like to see the Northern Lights but worries that’s the best bit and should be saved till last. Very happily, and gratefully, settled with family.
She tries not to take herself too seriously.
